mantelwaechter in medieval times
at the time of the frankish empire the remains of a coat belonging to St. Martin of Tours (316/17 – 387 bc),
who according to a legend had shared his coat with a freezing beggar, were carried into battle as an imperial
talisman to secure victory.
the “capa” was otherwise kept in a special room, the chapel (cloak room), in the royal palace in paris.
the frankish kings used this room for important acts of state and there was also a mantelwaechter (coat watcher):
the chaplain.
